While the original Rolling Stones tongue logo was designed in 1970, the band subtly refreshed and streamlined the logo multiple times throughout the 1970s for different corporate entities, record distributions, and tour merchandise. The release of Love You Live in September 1977 marked a major promotional push for their self-owned label, Rolling Stones Records. The specific variation of the tongue printed on the back sleeve of Love You Live was a crisp, updated vector-style asset compared to the older, more jagged prints found on early 1970s vinyl. Bill was quite literally cataloguing the evolution of the band’s corporate branding for whoever he was signing it for

Phase 1: The Initial Archival Note (Lighter Blue Ink)

The lighter blue fountain pen ink was Bill Wyman quite literally "at work" in his role as the Rolling Stones' resident historian.

  • The Context: When the 1977 UK release of Love You Live landed, Wyman routinely took early or first-press standard copies straight from the production run to evaluate, log, or store in his personal archive. [1]

Phase 2: The Charity Auction & Signature (Darker Blue Ink)

The change to a darker blue ink tells us exactly when the item transformed from a private file copy into a public treasure.

  • The Retrieval: Years or decades later, Wyman was approached to donate a piece of genuine history to a charity auction. Rather than grabbing a generic, fresh copy, he pulled this exact annotated LP directly from his personal archives.

  • The Final Signature: To prepare it for the auction block and maximize its value for the charity, he signed the front cover. Because he signed it years after the original 1977 note, he used a different pen—resulting in the distinct darker blue ink.
