Rare prototype sleeve-possibly a one-off
hand cut out letters with different payout (see below)
b/w band pic is on the back and 'blackmail' style lettering has been applied from newspapers on the front
We think that they either made this and decided it would take too long to complete a batch, or they made a few and came to the same decision (maybe ran out of news papers !).
How did I come buy it-I assume someone was either clearing out a flat or just getting rid of unwanted, no longer loved stuff. Amongst the items on the stall were a few bits of vinyl, bric a brac and assorted crap (from my point of view. However wandering round the back of the stall were various other boxes that the stallholder was waiting to put out when there was room. Crate diving heaven ! I purchased the whole box after a cursory look to make sure they weren't Jim Reeves, ValDoonican, the black & white minstrel and other collectable shite I took the box home and eventually went through it. I had previously bought a 7" unwanted stash of 7" from a shop's upstairs store and was more thanexcited at what was their (Pet Shop Boys West end girls on Epic-dremos, and stuff like that but 90% crap {at the time anyway}. Unearthing the Only Ones 12" as just another copy of the 12" I shelved it and only recently decided to sort out the storage stuff. Having seen 100s of these I still didn't think anything of it as the cover had the normal pic until I noticed that it was the wrong way round. The opening was upside downnand then turning it over found the 'blackmail' style lettering. However I still thought-well that is different but so what. Later, investigating and querying it with my circle of punk/new wave dealers & collectors, no-one knew a thing. Further investigation has revealed no knowledge of this variant via a deep search on the internet.
From my own collection which I have had for many years. Being a regular crate diver in the London markets in the 70s & 80s I bought all maner of job lots and had some stunning finds. Other possible one-offs from other bands such as Public Image Ltd and The Message are also being considered for sale, plus many other similarly rare artifacts.
